Most of us start with that familiar sound of the alarm going off in the morning, which cues the beginning of our morning routine. This means it is time to get up and get dressed in our work clothes for the day. For the purpose of this article, we are going to consider uniforms as company branded attire that must be worn while at work. While there may be many positives and negatives for the employees who are wearing uniforms, we are going to focus on the third of 5 benefits your business and culture may experience from implementing workplace uniforms: Equality.
Employees can sometimes find it intimidating to approach the supervisors, managers, or executives. Having a single uniform that everyone wears can help break down the barriers of hierarchy and enforce the idea of working together. Seeing a manager wearing the same uniform as the rest of the employees may make management seem less intimidating and more approachable for employees to express their ideas and concerns. It’s a good rule to remember that employees may not always approach higher-level positions when there is an issue to discuss; they may even have valuable ideas that are getting missed if the employee feels uncomfortable approaching people that are in a different position than themselves.
The equality created by wearing the same clothing may also reduce the stress for some employees. Many employees that do not have a standard uniform are faced with the task of choosing what to wear to work in the morning. While this may seem like a very simple task to some, this can be very stressful for others as they are worried what their co-workers will think of their clothing. This also takes the pressure away from not keeping up with fashion trends. It is important to note that for some individuals clothing signifies status, competition, and success. How does taking out the concerns of what to wear benefit your business? Well, potentially improving communication, lowering employees stress and reduced anxiety should help companies in most areas of business!
