Managing Friends and Family at the Workplace: Part 8 – Be Inclusive
This article is written to provide the reader with an understanding of why it is important to be inclusive and involve everyone in work projects when working with or planning to employ friends and family.
When you have a strong relationship with someone, it is natural that you will want to work with those individuals on team projects. However, it is important that you work with people outside of your immediate group. This will help bring in new ideas outside of your typical ideologies, which can be more productive. By including the whole team, you will achieve better results!
You want to ensure that you are giving everyone an equal opportunity to use their skills and feel included. Including everyone helps maintain a strong work culture and build business relationships, this in turn will also help build and maintain trust within the working environment as the team will see that you are treating friends or family members as you would treat them.
Working with friends and family will always pose a challenge. The best way to avoid bias is to intentionally treat each team member equally by being considerate, respectful, and inclusive.
Throughout the process of working with friends and family, it is important that you set boundaries and continue to touch base with what is and is not working. Providing regular feedback on performance will continue to build a strong working relationship while keeping your professional and private life separate. It cannot be stressed enough how important it is to make each person on your team feel valued by giving them the attention that they need.
Remember that no matter what happens, you should always be polite and professional and do not discuss your personal matters at the workplace.
