TikTok for your Business

What is TikTok?

7 mins read

There are a lot of social media platforms available and determining which platforms are suitable for your business is becoming more and more difficult every day. As social media has grown and evolved, a new app called TikTok has emerged as one of the juggernauts of the industry. TikTok is a great way to distribute your message to a large audience quickly and bring attention to your brand in many unique ways. These short form mobile videos are also enhanced by almost any popular song on the radio, without copyright infringement issues making them incredibly shareable by using your favorite music as a foundation.

TikTok, originally called Douyin (shaking sound) was founded in China back in 2016 where it innovated the short film idea from Vine, which were 6 second repeating videos, and Musical.ly, which was an app created in Shanghai by Alex Zhu and Luyu Yang in 2014. Musical.ly was an app where users could post 15 second lip syncs to popular songs and share them publicly. This really drew in musical crowds and the app reached around 70 million downloads by 2016, actually being acquired by TikTok’s parent company ByteDance in 2017 for $800 million.

When Musical.ly was bought in 2017 there was a merger of Douyin and Music.ly users. The separate company’s users were then combined and rebranded into the global app TikTok. The app evolved quickly into a platform for a multitude of topics and genres allowing people to showcase their talents, knowledge, dancing, singing, comedy, and even pets. It also became a great way to create excitement around an idea, product or business.

Why use TikTok for your business?

Boasting over 1 billion users in over 150 countries with 800 million active monthly users, this app is a great way to reach a large audience quickly. If your brand’s target audience includes anyone between the age 13 and 40, you should consider checking out TikTok.

As a business, for a fee, TikTok allows you to advertise with a video of up to 15 seconds and includes one button linking the user directly to your business. This makes TikTok a good way to expand the reach of your video content. If you are looking to make a video to inform the user of your brand but are okay not including a link-button, you can make a video up to 60 seconds. If you’re not already using video, then TikTok provides a simple and accessible way to incorporate video into your existing marketing strategy.  Some businesses will also approach  big TikTok creators to endorse their brand to quickly reach their large bubble of influence. This allows a way to get in contact with a much larger group than their own current following.

TikTok is a great way to increase interactions with your brand and encourage engagement. An effective and straightforward way to promote your business is by launching a hashtag challenge. You can choose an idea or theme and then encourage users to create, recreate, or make reaction videos using a branded hashtag that your business creates.

It’s still not a full advertising platform, but TikTok has recently introduced opportunities for advertisements. There are currently five different ad formats including in-feed ads, which are similar to Instagram adverts and appear as you scroll through: Branded Takeovers that appear when someone opens the app, and Branded Effects that use AR filters, Branded stickers and Branded lenses.

While these advertising options offer a lot of potential for connecting with TikTok’s vast audience, they can also have a high cost that might not be affordable for all businesses. It’s worth considering whether your business will want to pay for advertisements on TikTok or if you’ll want to use it in other ways to promote your business. These ways include, but are not limited to, making a video raising awareness of your brand, duetting larger creators in order to access their viewers, or creating a series of interesting videos that viewers will want to follow.

This article highlights just some of the perks of using TikTok and how it can help you to grow your social media presence. We highly encourage you to take some time to get comfortable with the platform, understand how it works, who your target audience is and what your competitors are doing. This is a great way to access a younger audience and have your brand reach people who may not have normally been exposed to your brand. TikTok can be a powerful tool, if used right. So, what are you waiting for, TikTok, the time to check it out is now!
